Wimbledon is a suburb in southwest London, in the municipality of Merton and located 7 miles (11.3 km) from Charing Cross. In the last hundred years, Wimbledon has been internationally known as the home of the Wimbledon tennis championships.
The Wimbledon Championship is the oldest and most prestigious sporting event in the world. Wimbledon takes place in June/ July and it is the third Grand Slam tournament played on the year, preceded by the Australia Open and Roland Garros, and it is followed by the U.S. Open. It begins on June 25th. The tournament takes place from about 1800 and is carried out both on grass and on the surface, the only of its kind to do so. The duration of the championship is two weeks but it can be extended in case of rain.
During the 2012 Olympics, it will host the tennis competition.
