Portobello Road Market draws tourists. The main market day for antiques is Saturday. However, there are also fruit and vegetable stalls in the market, which trade throughout the week and are located further north than the antiques, near the Westway Flyover.
The market began as a fresh-food market in the 19th century; antiques dealers arrived in the late 1940s and 50s.
The market section of Portobello road runs in a direction generally between the north-northwest and the south-south-east. The northern terminus is at Golborne Road; the southern end is at Westbourne Grove, to the east. The market area is about 3,080 feet (0.58 miles or 940 metres) long.
About one third of the way from its north end, the market runs beneath adjacent bridges of the A40 road and the Hammersmith & City line of the London Underground.
In this colourful antique and flee market with over 2000 stalls on Saturdays, there are so many wonderful bargain finds to be made!
The street takes its name from Admiral Vernon’s 1739 conquest of the Spanish port of Portobelo in modern-day Panama. On Saturdays it’s now home to a famous antiques and street market.
London’s most exciting market has it all: antiques, food, streetwear and even typically British bits and pieces.
Spend the morning poring over the vintage jewelry and unique antiques, and explore Notting Hill afterward.
Although there is a lot less stalls, its nicer to go on a Thursday, as prices can be lower and there is a HUGE reduction in people traffic. For deals on fruit and veg wait until about 6pm.
I use to spend all my Saturdays there... its amazing atmosfere.. try it out and let me know. Its best on Saturdays. Enjoy!
Yep, it's where Hugh Grant moped over Julia Roberts, and it has lost none of its charm since. It's a London must and the distinctive multicoloured buildings seem custom built for picture taking.
Enjoy the Market on a Saturday. Walk through the colorful buildings, purchase nice stuff and eat yummy goodies. In a nutshell, this is a walk to remember.
Fashion stalls are spread all over the the market, so if you're hard core fashionite you'll need to leave the high heels at home, head out early
