About Picadilly Circus
Piccadilly Circus is a famous square and street intersection located in the West End of London in the district of Westminster.
It was built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with the main shopping street, Piccadilly (the word "circus" refers to a "circular open space at a street intersection), and now links directly to the theaters on Shaftesbury Avenue and with the Haymarket, Coventry Street (towards Leicester Square) and Glasshouse Street. Its proximity to major shopping and entertainment, its central location in the heart of West End, and the fact that most traffic intersection have made Piccadilly Circus a meeting point and a tourist attraction in itself.
This intersection is known for its large video screens and neon billboards mounted on the building at the corner facing the north side, as well as the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and the statue known as Eros (named in Sometimes the Angel of Christian Charity, and is actually Anteros). It is surrounded by many notable buildings, including the London Pavilion and Criterion Theatre. Under the square is the Piccadilly Circus station, London Underground.
