Opened on October 8, 2005, the main building of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia poses with a twofold purpose: to build an audience and configure multiple an urban landmark which, in turn, is implemented in an urban area as a dynamic and consolidator of the place.

The innovative architecture of this building of 37,000 square meters and a height of 70 meters and houses four different audiences for opera, theater and music, surprises with its multiplicity of environments. It has cantilevered platforms at various heights with walkways and greenery, which are accessed by panoramic lifts and stairs located inside metal housings on both sides of the building.

The overall shape of the building is lenticular develop under a jacket or steel pen, supported by two supports, one at its western end and one running through the east side of the cantilever completely covered. The material par excellence is the white concrete as part of large structural supports of the building while the "trencadís" is the second most used material lining the spectacular "shells" of Palau.

The cover is the most representative of the whole, as well as its structural and geometric rigor, contains a large load of plastic expression and intention that makes the artistic nature of the activities inside to outside.

The cover or "pen" is the most dramatic structural element with 230 meters long and more than 70 m. high as the two "shells", which embrace the building exterior, are made of steel with an approximate weight of 3,000 tons. coated on the outside with tile (trencadís). The maximum dimensions of the building envelope, taking into account the curved shapes that form them are 163 m. long and 87 m. wide.
