New York has teams in the four major sports leagues in North America, each of which is also headquartered in the city.
Baseball is the most popular sport among the inhabitants. There have been fourteen World Series disputed between local teams which is often called Subway Series. New York is one of five EEUU metropolitan areas which has two baseball teams. The two teams currently in the Major League Baseball are the New York Yankees and New York Mets, possibly maintaining a rivalry comparable to that between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees have won 26 titles, while the Mets did it twice.
The city is represented in the National Football League New York Jets and New York Giants, though both teams play in local at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.
The New York Rangers represent the city in the National Hockey League.
In football, the Red Bull New York is the team that represents the city in Major League Soccer. This local team also plays at Giants Stadium. In addition, New York had other mythical football teams, now gone, as the MetroStars and the Cosmos, the team with world stars who played the likes of Pelé, Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto and Johan Neeskens.
The NBA team of the city is New York Knicks, while the WNBA's New York Liberty.
The city also hosts many events outside these sports. In Queens dispute the U.S. Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
