About Big Ben
Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London and it is generally extended to refer to the clock or the clock tower as well. It is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. The clock was finished being built on April 10, 1858.
If a fire did not destroyed the Parliament in 1834, maybe Big Ben would not exist. After the fire, hundreds of architects proposed many projects and the lucky winner, Charles Barry, integrated into his plan a gigantic clock conceived by the Astronomer Royal, Sir George Airey.
