About Barrio de Santa Cruz
The district of Santa Cruz, old medieval Jewish quarter located in the heart of Seville, is one of the most emblematic and picturesque city. With narrow, winding streets, Seville-style homes have patios and balconies stately wrought-iron railing adorned with flowers.
The district was founded when King Ferdinand III of Castile conquered the city and concentrated on Sevilla's second largest Jewish community in Spain after Toledo. After the expulsion of the Jews in 1483, the neighborhood was abandoned and fell into decline until the early nineteenth century proceeded to redevelopment, led by local architect Juan Talavera y Heredia.
In the neighborhood is the Teresas Convent, founded by St. Teresa of Jesus in 1575. In the upper part of the neighborhood is the venerable priest Hospice, which was built as an asylum for retired priests and contains a large number of works of art.
